You could possible try the Prussick, or to tighten/shorten a line the sheep-shank...

What is the know used to tie down
contents of a trailer.

John, for your clothes line or tent the knot I learned was the tautline hitch, but I've found another one known as the guy-line hitch that I like much better. Look for it here: http://www.earlham.edu/~peters/knotgrfx/gallery.htm

John low is looking for a knot to use in tightening clothes lines and tent lines. For tent lines, I use the Taut-line Hitch, which can be found in any standard camping or knot-tying reference. For clothes lines, one can use the Taut-line Hitch, but a more secure knot is what I know as the Trucker's Hitch, which can be found in many paddling references as a tie-down knot for cartopping canoes and kayaks or knot-tying references.
